Economist proposes 7 solutions to the problem of increasing the number of vehicles in Baghdad: We need government efforts

Economic researcher Adel Al-Dalfi suggested 7 solutions to the problem of increasing the number of vehicles in the capital, while stressing that we need governmental efforts to address these issues.
Al-Dalfi explained that “the increase in the number of cars in Baghdad and the resulting traffic congestion is a complex problem that requires comprehensive solutions at the level of infrastructure, urban planning, and policies followed in other countries.”
Al-Dalfi added, “To solve this problem, the government must give citizens incentives to replace old cars with more efficient ones, especially hybrids that are environmentally friendly,” indicating that “old cars must be removed from the capital, Baghdad, in particular, and a cash allowance must be given for installments without importing an alternative.”
Al-Dalfi said, “The public transportation network must be developed and expanded,” noting that “increasing the number of bus lines and the frequency of their trips to make them more effective and attractive to citizens will solve part of this problem.”
“It requires the creation of light rail and metro lines to connect the main areas,” he continued, adding to Al Mada that “encouraging the use of bicycles by creating special roads for them and providing safe spaces for parking them will provide us with a suitable environment in the country and reduce the severity of congestion.”
The economic researcher stressed that “to solve this complex problem, the country needs integrated efforts between government agencies and civil society to develop appropriate solutions.”
It is noteworthy that the Strategic Center for Human Rights announced earlier this year that Iraq ranked 55th in car ownership rates in the world based on the percentage of cars used per 1,000 people, and it also ranked 20th out of 63 countries with a growth rate of 4% annually.
“The number of cars in Iraq has increased to reach 8 million cars in 2024, an increase of 1.9 percent, or about one car for every 5.55 people, compared to 2023, which was 1.8 percent compared to 2022,” said Fadhel Al-Gharawi, head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights, in a statement. He stressed that “the number of cars in Iraq is expected to exceed 10 million cars by 2030, noting that the increase in the number of cars will put pressure on the infrastructure of roads and bridges, in addition to the high costs of importing.”
