    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
MP Ali Saadoun Al-Lami revealed, today, Tuesday (July 30, 2024), the position of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on the oil smuggling file in the North Oil Company.
Al-Lami, a member of the parliamentary oil committee, said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The special investigation committee into the file of crude oil smuggling in the North Oil Company continues its work according to legal procedures, stressing that his committee has not yet received any official reports regarding the developments of the investigations, which will take on broader dimensions in order to uncover the facts, especially with the existence of suspicions about the involvement of one of the well-known companies in the smuggling file, but it is too early to accuse directly without concluding the investigation."
He added, "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's position is strict on the issue of smuggling oil and its derivatives, and he gave direct instructions to end the smuggling arms in all governorates and open an immediate investigation into any information received in this direction, and he is directly following up on the results of the investigation, noting that the Prime Minister is aware of the danger of oil smuggling and its repercussions on the national economy."
Al-Lami pointed out that "the investigations are still in their early stages, but they represent a message that there are no exceptions and everyone is subject to legal accountability, noting that efforts to cut off the arms of smuggling mean ending the draining of huge sums of money from the country's treasury."
A source in the North Oil Company reported on Sunday (July 28, 2024) that an official had been arrested on corruption charges, while indicating that four other officials were being detained pending investigation into corruption cases.
The source said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "A force from the National Security Service arrested the director of the surveying department at the North Oil Company," indicating that "this comes the day after a special force affiliated with the Council of Ministers arrested three engineers and 10 employees and guards of the company during the past few days."
He added, "The detainees were accused of sending larger quantities of oil than the designated amount through the Kirkuk-Kurdistan oil pipeline to a private oil company in Erbil for refining purposes and then returning it to the federal government."
The source confirmed that "10 people out of a total of 13 detainees were released," explaining that "two of the four detainees are from the Kurdish component, and the others are from the Arab component, and investigations are ongoing with them," noting that "the arrests came after 3 months of ongoing investigations into the case."
