Activists on several websites and pages reviewed by Sumaria News stated that “the amendment to the Personal Status Law includes conditions in addition to women.”

They added, "These conditions are that the woman has the right to file a lawsuit against the husband demanding the dowry even if they live in the same house. The woman also has the right to demand payment for breastfeeding the child. The woman also has the right to demand a maid and not to do any work in the house."

Citizens are asking, "Are these conditions true in the Personal Status Law, or are they just guesses?"

A wave of widespread anger is still sweeping the Iraqi street following the proposed amendments to the Personal Status Law in Iraq.

Today, Wednesday, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zidane, discussed the comments related to the draft law after the House of Representatives completed its initial reading. He received a group of women members of the House of Representatives and the Iraqi Women’s Network, where they discussed the comments related to amending the law.

The law gives citizens the right to choose to resort to one of the two so-called codes (one Shiite and one Sunni) in organizing their personal status. The codes, which represent legal controls and provisions, are prepared by the Sunni and Shiite councils and are submitted to Parliament.

MP Alia Nassif confirmed that “among the reasons that made us reject amending the Personal Status Law is the article that stipulates that a code of Sharia rulings be drawn up by religious authorities and submitted to Parliament within 6 months of the entry into force of this law. They are proposing a law in installments, meaning that we vote on the law today and after six months its codes are written!!”
