    [rtl]Iraqi economists have criticised the increase in social support spending in the country’s budget, which reached more than 12 trillion dinars during the first half of this year. [/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Economists called for the need to regulate support, because it is considered a waste of the Iraqi people’s money, which should be spent on developing the country’s infrastructure, instead of spending it randomly.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Former Minister of Electricity, Louay Al-Khatib, told Al-Eqtisad News that developing the electricity sector, in the presence of support, cannot be reformed, noting that electricity is considered a commodity and must be sold to citizens at prices that exceed cost. [/rtl]
     
    [rtl]He stressed that social support should be allocated to needy groups, not to the rich and those able to support them. [/rtl]
     
    [rtl]The Iraqi government supports electricity by 90%, in addition to supporting private generators during the summer. [/rtl]
     
    [rtl]The current government has increased the number of beneficiaries of social welfare, as the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Asadi, revealed that there are 15 million beneficiaries of the ministry.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Al-Asadi pointed out in a televised interview that "more than 900,000 people are covered by social welfare for the year 2023," stressing that "500,000 people capable of working receive a salary from social welfare."[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]On the other hand, economic expert Mahmoud Dagher said that the state's large spending is an obligation for many years, and any decrease will appear negatively. [/rtl]
     
    [rtl]He added that the state's expansion of social care is not good, and the state must review this matter.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Although the general goal of the social protection programme in Iraq is to ensure that the weak and poor, including children, youth and women, have equal opportunities, the reality is different.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Government data shows that nearly half of those receiving social protection salaries are children, which means that half of those receiving social protection salaries do not receive money in their hands.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Returning to the total number of Iraqis covered by social welfare, their number is 6 million and 700 thousand, which means that about 52% of those receiving social welfare salaries are children.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]Many of the documented cases prove that hundreds of those registered for social protection are from the affluent classes, and this increases the burdens on the state, as a result of granting money to undeserving parties.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]In addition, the economic expert, Ali Daadoush, described the social support file in Iraq as a “problem,” while stressing that the government cannot differentiate between the vulnerable and wealthy classes.[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]In an interview with Al-Iqtisad News, Daadoush said, “The social support provided cannot be separated between one class and another, given that the government provides support to all segments of Iraqi society.”[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]He points out that "this problem can only be solved by increasing the value of the collection, in areas with high income, which can be used through electronic payment methods, by encouraging citizens to use applications to pay the collection for services provided by the government such as electricity and water."[/rtl]
     
    [rtl]He reiterates his emphasis that "the government cannot differentiate between one region and another except by urging employees in service ministries to deduct larger sums from these regions in order to achieve equality among the classes of society."[/rtl]
