    Baghdad Today - Erbil
The head of the Kurdistan Region Journalists Syndicate, Azad Hama Amin, commented today, Sunday (September 8, 2024), on the closure of a media institution in Sulaymaniyah by a force affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and the impact of this issue on press freedoms in the region.
Hama Amin said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Jawdir Foundation is official and registered, and a special force called 'Commando' closed it down, but the problem is that the dispute over ownership should be the security intervention of the local police exclusively."
He added, "The closure of any media institution can only take place by a judicial order, according to Law No. 35 of 2007, which stipulates that the court is the competent authority to close any institution."
He pointed out that "if there is any problem or dispute over ownership, the Court of First Instance is the only body that has the right to issue a closure decision, provided that it is implemented by the local police exclusively, and not the Asayish or the Special Forces."
The head of the Journalists Syndicate in the region expressed the Syndicate’s concern about the decision to close any media institution, regardless of its political affiliation or the party it belongs to. As a Syndicate, we express our solidarity with journalists and media institutions, and any transgression conflicts with freedoms of expression protected in accordance with Law 35.
On the evening of Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's commando forces raided the building of the "Jawder" Foundation, affiliated with the Kurdish politician Mala Bakhtiar, in Sulaymaniyah Governorate.
The Committee for the Protection of Press Freedom and Journalists' Rights in the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate condemned the behavior of the Patriotic Union's "commando" forces against the "Jawder" Foundation, describing it as a "threat to freedom of expression ."
For its part, the Metro Center for Defending Journalists' Rights condemned the storming of the headquarters of the "Jawdir" network in Sulaymaniyah by elements affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, stressing that this act "will negatively affect the reputation of the capital of culture, Sulaymaniyah, and is an unsuccessful step to resolve the differences."
