Baghdad/Al-Masala: The head of the Economy, Industry and Trade Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, Ahmed Salim Al-Kanani, announced that the House of Representatives will discuss the law to cancel the “Law Ratifying the Economic Unity Agreement between the Arab League Countries” No. (169) of 1963.
According to Al-Kanani, the cancellation of this law will lead to Iraq losing large shares in prominent Arab companies such as the Arab Investment Company, the Jordanian-Iraqi Company, and the Arab Vaccine Company, in addition to large financial losses.
Al-Kanani explained that this decision will affect Iraq's ability to deal reciprocally with Arab countries, which will make Iraq a consumer of goods without the ability to impose its conditions. He added that the Iraqi economy's step backwards will threaten its chances of growth and economic openness.
For his part, Haitham Al-Mansour, an observer of Iraqi affairs, considered the ratification of the agreement important because it contributes to organizing and revitalizing the trade sector, and helps in balancing the trade balance. He added that the agreement has positive effects on economic and political stability.
In light of the chaos and events that occupy Iraqi public opinion, there is an attempt to divert attention away from the essential issues by focusing on marginal events and controversial series.
Amidst this noise that floods social media and the media, more important issues are forgotten, such as Iraq’s economic interests, which are facing a real threat due to the attempt to cancel the “Law Ratifying the Economic Unity Agreement between the Arab League Countries.”
Economic analyses indicate that cancelling the agreement will lead to huge financial losses for Iraq, as Iraq will give up its shares in leading strategic companies, which will deepen the financial losses and affect Iraq’s ability to benefit from these investments.
Moreover, the decision has far-reaching economic implications, as it weakens Iraq’s ability to interact and negotiate similarly with Arab countries. Iraq may find itself a consumer of goods without real negotiating power.
The step taken by the Iraqi parliament seems to open the doors of ambiguity for the future of the Iraqi economy, with increasing questions about how to deal with an economic legacy that extends for more than sixty years.
