Member of the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, MP Thaer Al-Jubouri, revealed the formation of a committee to assess desertification losses in Iraq.

Al-Jubouri explained to Al-Maalouma Agency, "Desertification has affected nine Iraqi governorates to varying degrees, especially in the southern and central regions, noting that there are negative indicators, the most prominent of which is migration at alarming levels from rural areas to cities."
He added, "Desertification is a worrying phenomenon because it is creeping towards agricultural areas and causing severe damage, stressing that the committee will present important results on the extent of the effects of desertification and what are the possible solutions to stop it."
He pointed out "the effort to revive the vegetation cover that was damaged in the past years as a result of erosion, fires, drought and neglect."
He pointed out that "Iraq has lost 20 to 25% of its orchards in the past four decades due to various reasons, indicating that "orchards used to form a wide vegetation cover, especially around major cities."
He called for "reconsidering the vegetation cover file and supporting afforestation plans to be strategic and funded by the government, considering that climate change has a direct impact on large areas of Iraq."
It is noteworthy that Iraq suffers from climate fluctuations, drought and high temperatures, which directly affect the lives of many citizens, especially in rural areas. End 25 F
