The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities announced on Sunday the closure of more than 170 unlicensed tourism companies, while clarifying its procedures towards illegal companies.
The director of tourism groups in the Ministry of Culture, Mahdi Ghadhban, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), followed by “Al-Iqtisad News”: “The committee formed by order of Diwani in 2012, which includes the National Intelligence Service, Tourism Security, and the Tourism Authority, and with the support of the Baghdad Operations Command and the National Security Service.” It closed more than 170 unlicensed companies, and filed lawsuits against the closed companies to restore their activity.
Al-Ghadban added, “The illegal practices that were proven against these companies were on two levels, the first at the economic level: evasion of the tax and legal fees imposed in terms of establishment, granting of leave, work, and fines was recorded, and the second at the sector and citizen level, where travel tickets were forged.” For the purpose of obtaining hard currency, and participating in the activity of official travel companies, which causes weak revenues for the companies’ financial income through competing offers in the market, and their failure to be subject to legal conditions, which makes their work outside the controls and instructions in form and substance, in addition to exploiting the citizen financially and morally, and showing the reality of tourism in Iraq. In an uncivilized manner.”
Regarding the mechanisms for applying for a license, Al-Ghadhban explained, “The mechanism is to submit an application to the Tourism Authority, attached with an academic document and a certificate of experience in tourism work, and it is preferable for the applicant to be a graduate of tourism and hospitality.”
