Shafaq News/ The head of the Department of Foreign Relations in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Safeen Dizayee, confirmed on Thursday that the regional government supports the completion of the vital development road project that links Iraq with Turkey and Europe.
In a statement to reporters today in Erbil, Dizayee said, “The Kurdistan Regional Government’s position on the development road project is very clear, stressing that this project should benefit all Iraqis, as well as neighboring countries as well.”
He added that the path of the development road project is clear and that the regional government supports it.
Dzii's statement comes at a time when Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, arrived in the Turkish city of Istanbul yesterday, Wednesday, to participate in the quadripartite ministerial meeting on the Iraqi Development Road Project.
The media office of the Ministry of Transport said in a statement yesterday: We are awaiting important decisions from the quadripartite ministerial meeting in Türkiye.
The American website "Al-Monitor" reported last Saturday that Istanbul is hosting a quadripartite ministerial meeting today, Thursday, for the countries participating in the "Development Road" project, which aims to link Basra to Turkey and beyond.
The American website quoted the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Oraloglu, as saying in a report translated by Shafaq News Agency, that: The meeting will be held in the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, which was the headquarters of the last Ottoman sultans.
According to the report, Turkey will host ministers from Iraq, Qatar and the UAE on August 29 to discuss the ambitious project.
The report quoted the Turkish minister as saying: The ministers will meet to take "important decisions."
After noting that Qatar and the UAE are considered potential investors in the project, the report stated that the project, estimated to be worth about $20 billion, was formalized during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Baghdad last April.
While the report indicated that Iraq possesses about 10% of the world's oil reserves and represents 5% of global production, it said that energy will play a pivotal role in the project, while the Iraqi government believes that the project will significantly reduce the cost of trade between China and Europe.
It is worth noting that the "Development Road" project is a land and railway road extending from Iraq to Turkey and its ports. The length of the road and railway is 1,200 kilometers inside Iraq, and it aims primarily to transport goods between Europe and the Gulf countries.
The project's investment budget amounts to about 17 billion US dollars, of which 6.5 billion is for the expressway, and 10.5 billion for the electric train. It will be completed in 3 phases, the first ending in 2028, the second in 2033, and the third in 2050.
The project is expected to provide about 100,000 job opportunities in the first phase, and one million job opportunities after its completion.
