He explained that the project includes reducing the waste of water and utilization of salt water in agriculture through desalination through the introduction of new varieties of crops and seeds resistant to salinity and cultivation of plants did not exist previously consume less water and have high economic value to secure income for small farmers and the introduction of modern irrigation techniques And drip irrigation, pointing out that this project will have a direct impact on the support of Iraqi farms in the southern provinces.
"The organization is in the final stages of finalizing the project and we are waiting for funding from the European Union, which is usually disbursed within three to four months," Zoubi said. "The project is likely to be implemented in the third quarter of this year."
He pointed out that the organization has another project to be signed next week and the start of work on April 1, worth 20 million dollars to support the so-called "value chain" in the agricultural sector in Nineveh province, including the development of methods of warning and harvesting, storage and food processing and marketing to farmers, The project was launched six months ago and also with the support of the European Union, which includes the rehabilitation and repair and renovation of the second and third phase of the irrigation of the northern island in Nineveh province, the first phase was completed last year and is currently in full funding to secure funding for the second and To rehabilitate the project, which provides water for 200,000 people and will contribute about half a million tons of wheat, vegetables and other crops.
He pointed out that another important project supported by Japan includes the distribution of greenhouses, seeds and agricultural tools for small farmers in three provinces, Anbar, Salahuddin and Nineveh, as well as the replacement of pumping stations of farmers with new pumping stations working on solar energy in the same provinces, To implement a project to support farmers in the province of Diyala, which includes supporting farmers with seeds, cash for work and fertilizer and vegetable seeds, wheat and others, has been launched since March 1 last.
He added that the organization carried out the buffalo pollination project to support the buffalo breeders in the southern marshes as well as the implementation of projects to control red palm weevil and will be completed in the next three months. He said that the organization is in talks with the Swedish agency on the safety of food security to carry out promising projects in Iraq .
He stressed that FAO is in the process of signing agreements with countries and organizations to implement projects related to soil, desertification, water and plant and animal production, pointing out that the organization has opened sub-offices in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Dhi Qar to supervise and follow up on agricultural projects implemented throughout the country.
He added that there is high level coordination between the FAO and the relevant ministries (agriculture, water resources, health and environment) as well as the directorates of agriculture and provincial councils to implement the projects, indicating that there is a lack of funding by the countries and donors, and FAO is ongoing discussions with donor countries for the purpose of securing funds to implement Full Projects.
