Abadi in landmark meeting with Trump
    Mostapha Hassan
Iraqi Premiere Haider al-Abadi on Monday met with the US president Donald J. Trump in the first meeting between the two leaders since the latter took office in late January 2017.

The meeting also comes as Trump is set to host a 68-nation meeting geared toward advancing the fight against ISIS, the NBC news said.

Many experts see the meeting crucial, as it came less than a week since Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman came to Washington and met the new president.

Iran and the threat it poses in the region has been hot on the agenda of the two meetings.

In the meeting with Abadi, Trump said Iran was one of the issues facing his team and the Iraqi delegation. He seized the opportunity to criticize the nuclear deal his predecessor, Barack Obama, inked with Iran, the NBC news reported.

According to experts, this visit is of great importance. There, Abadi is outlining the guidelines of the US-Iraqi joint policy when it comes to tackling the Iranian threat.

Fight against ISIS also came up at the two officials' meeting, where Abadi said Iraq, despite having the strongest counterterrorism forces, needs more cooperation with Washington on the file.

Before coming to power, Trump campaigned on a promise to dramatically ramp up the assault on ISIS and has vowed to eradicate "radical terrorism."

    Joint roadmap

Abadi and Trump, at their meeting, outlined several principles in the joint roadmap on ISIS, Iran and the Iraqi oil, experts told the Baghdad Post.

Before leaving for Washington, Abadi said in a video statement: "We are in the last chapter, the final stages to eliminate IS militarily in Iraq."

Abadi asked Trump not to leak any portion of what the two sides agreed regarding Iran to journalists, since Teheran has many surrogates inside Iraq to use for pressuring the government before accomplishing its mission to crush ISIS.

Abadi's request came after the White House mentioned in its statement the issues discussed in the telephone conversation between Abadi and Trump, saying they broached upon the Iranian threat to the region.

At this point, Abadi announced that Iraq keeping itself aloof from any regional conflict.

Trump asked Abadi to start measures to scale down the Iranian security influence inside Iraq, sources said, citing Abadi's recent remarks that Iran Militia in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) terror group will not be allowed to run for parliament seats.

Militiamen have no place in the electoral race, he added.

Insiders consider the move as a stern warning to Tehran that its blood-stained hands will be cut off in Iraq. Also, Trump briefed Abadi on key points of the agreements penned with Saudi prince, including huge support for Iraq 'in case it forsakes Iran and gets back to its Arab sphere, the experts revealed.

The meeting on Tuesday between bin Salman and Trump appeared to signal a meeting of the minds on many issues between Trump and Prince Mohammed, especially the Iranian role in the region, analysts suggest.

The deputy crown prince viewed the nuclear deal as "very dangerous," the senior adviser said, adding that both leaders had identical views on "the danger of Iran's regional expansionist activities." Fortune quoted bin Salman as saying.

Another thorny issue was discussed at the landmark meenting. It is the Iraqi oil.

At a forum hosted by NBC on September 7, Trump suggested seizing Iraqi oil would have been a way to pay for the Iraq war.

We go in, we spend $3tn, we lose thousands and thousands of lives, and then … what happens is we get nothing, Trump further stated.

However, the US president then rectified his remarks, saying it was misquoted. Moreover, he vowed to increase the US investments in the Iraqi oil sector.

Yet US Defense Secretary, James Mattis denied US intent to seize Iraq oil.

"We're not in Iraq to seize anybody's oil." Mattis told reporters before departing for Baghdad on February 20.
