US President Donald Trump has volunteered for the first quarter of the year to serve the national parks, according to White House spokesman Sean Spicer, while the environmental group criticized the donation and promised a "giant fake check".
Spicer handed over a $ 78,333 check to Interior Minister Ryan Zink, who oversees national parks and monuments.
Trump said earlier he would donate his full annual salary, but critics quickly indicated that his donation went to an agency that wants to cut its funding by more than $ 1 billion.
Trump's budget proposal calls for a 12 percent reduction ($ 1.5 billion) in the budget of the Interior Ministry, which oversees the national parks.
Zink said he was "delighted" with Trump's donation, noting that it would be used for maintenance work.
During the presidential campaign, Trump pledged to give up his annual salary of $ 400,000 if elected.
But critics of the move responded in social media, saying the donation would cost no more than two hours of security in its Mar El Lago, Florida, or the equivalent of half a day's security at the Trump Tower.
The Sierra Club environmental group was quick to respond to Twitter, describing Trump's donation as "paying attention to the need for $ 12 billion to meet the cost of maintenance in national parks."
"America's parks, people and the economies they support need real funding, not a huge fake check," she said.
Meanwhile, some Trump supporters praised the move.
Trump had clashed with the National Parks Service shortly after being sworn in.
