{Local: Al Furat News} The Strategic Center for Human Rights considered, today, Friday, that labor, dropout, human trafficking, domestic violence, and climate change are the most prominent challenges facing childhood in Iraq.
The head of the center, Fadhel Al-Gharawi, said in a statement today, a copy of which was received by {Euphrates News}, that the reality of children’s rights in Iraq is still witnessing many challenges, the most important of which are labor, dropout, human trafficking, domestic violence, and climate change.
He stressed that Iraq ranks fourth in child labor after Yemen, Sudan and Egypt, with a rate of 4.9% in young age groups, whose work is concentrated in the industrial, agricultural and service sectors at high rates.
Al-Gharawi added that the statistics on domestic violence recorded against children indicated that the number of girls who were subjected to domestic violence was higher than that of boys, as the percentage of attacks on girls was 73%, while the percentage of male juveniles subjected to domestic violence was 27%.
The head of the center also pointed out that two million school-age children are outside the educational institution, while 30% of children are registered as having dropped out of school.
Al-Gharawi also said that children in Iraq are among the most affected groups by climate change, and according to UNICEF reports, Iraq ranks 61st out of 163 countries in the UNICEF index on climate risks to children.
Al-Gharawi added that the recorded statistics indicated that 160 children were victims of the crime of trafficking in 2023-2024 in Iraq, stressing that Iraq's rank in the childhood index is still low.
In conclusion, the Centre called on Parliament and the government to expedite the enactment of the Child Protection Law, in addition to activating the national strategy for the protection of children’s rights, calling on the government to launch a fund to protect children’s rights.
The United Nations declared Universal Children's Day in 1954 as a global event celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, raise awareness among the world's children and improve their well-being. It is also the date on which the General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
