Kirkuk Police Command refused on Thursday to comment on the controversy surrounding the entry of Kurdish citizens from the Kurdistan Region into the province on the eve of the general population census in Iraq, which sparked resentment among parties in the province.
Kirkuk Police spokesman, Amer Al-Nouri, said, “The issue of citizens entering Kirkuk Governorate is not related to the police directorate,” and “Kirkuk Police opened checkpoints to citizens, two days before the curfew, pursuant to a decision issued by the governorate administration.”
He added, "We will not have any comment on the issue and will not make any statements about it."
A statement was attributed to the Kirkuk Police Directorate, regarding the controversy over the entry of cars from the provinces of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah into the province, saying, “Isn’t it the right of any citizen to prove himself through the census?”, but the police spokesman’s statement denies this.
The Ministry of Planning confirmed that the general population census will depend on counting citizens in their places of residence, and the citizen will be registered in the place even if he entered it 24 hours before the census.
A large number of Kurdish citizens from Erbil and Sulaymaniyah headed to their original areas in the disputed areas, especially (Kirkuk and Diyala), to participate in the census and register there, which sparked positions and objections from some parties in the two governorates.
Arab and Turkmen parties accused the Kurdistan Regional Government of directing thousands of Kurds to Kirkuk with the aim of “influencing the demographic composition of the province,” but the responsible authorities in the region confirmed that they had agreed with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, during his recent visit to Erbil, that the citizens of the disputed areas would participate from their original places.
The Turkmen Front said that it “is following with great concern the clear violations taking place in the general population census process in Kirkuk Governorate, where the entry of many families who are not original residents of the governorate has been monitored, publicly and in front of the eyes of public opinion and security services, in a blatant attempt to manipulate the population reality and change the demographic character of the governorate.”
While the Arab coalition in Kirkuk called on the Sudanese Prime Minister to “stop the census in the province to avoid tampering with its population reality.”
According to information obtained by Al-Jabal Platform, the census completion rate in Kirkuk Governorate has reached 90% so far.
