Member of Parliament Mohammed Al-Bayati revealed the latest developments in the general amnesty and personal status laws, attributing the reason for the delay in voting on them to the lack of conviction of each component in the provisions of the laws of the other parties.
Al-Bayati said, “Having laws in one basket leads to very difficult debates and discussions.”
He pointed out that "the real estate law serves the Kurds more than others, the amnesty law is demanded by the Sunni component and the personal status law by the Shiite sect."
He explained that “the conflicting parties hope to pass the general amnesty and personal status laws after the census holiday.”
He, a member of the parliamentary education committee, added that “there are laws of the education committee that are still suspended, including the 2020 amendment law to equate certificates. Despite the objection of some representatives, it has been settled and read more than once and is now ready for voting.”
Al-Bayati continued, “Also, amending the private education law, and clarifying the nature of the relationship between the educational institution and the investor, so that a secretariat or board of trustees is formed, in which the investor contributes to managing it with the rest of the educational cadres, for the purpose of issuing administrative and financial decisions related to private universities.”
Earlier, Suzan Mansour, a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, called for “focusing on the general amnesty law that addresses prison issues, including those detained for long periods for minor crimes.”
She added that "proposals related to the personal status law must be presented independently in order to be seriously discussed," noting that "there are currently no legal proposals to read and discuss."
