Baghdad/Al-Masala: In a remarkable and controversial development on the regional scene, Israel has filed an official complaint with the UN Security Council against Iraq, accusing Iraqi armed factions, affiliated with the “Popular Mobilization Forces,” of launching missile attacks on its territory.
In his complaint, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon considered Baghdad responsible for these attacks, which gives Israel a justification for possible strikes against Iraq. In response, the Iraqi government expressed its categorical rejection of these accusations, stressing that the decision of peace and war remains the exclusive preserve of the Iraqi state.
Political analyses indicated that the Israeli move aims to exert international pressure on Iraq, in order to reduce the influence of armed factions, which Israel accuses of carrying out more than 120 missile attacks in recent months.
An informed political source said, “Israel seeks to neutralize Iraq from the regional equation, by igniting internal clashes between the Iraqi government and those factions.”
In return, the Iraqi government directed the security services to pursue any military activity outside the state’s control, stressing its commitment to international law and the United Nations Charter.
Government sources said, “This decision carries a clear message to the armed factions that the state will not compromise on imposing the rule of law.”
The issue sparked widespread debate. A tweet on the X platform said: “Israel is playing with fire! If it continues to incite, it may find itself facing uncontrollable regional reactions.” Another commented: “The Iraqi factions are putting us in front of a difficult equation. Either we control the loose weapons, or we face dire international consequences.”
In this context, analyses indicate that “the continued activity of armed factions outside the framework of the state poses a double danger; it threatens Iraq’s sovereignty and exposes it to external pressures.”
She added that Parliament is currently working on issuing a law criminalizing the use of weapons without government permission.
Military sources spoke of the major challenges facing the Iraqi government in controlling the armed factions, noting that some of them have logistical and armament capabilities that match those of the state. According to information obtained by international bodies, these factions continue to receive ongoing regional support, which complicates the task of controlling them.
An Iraqi citizen considered, in a post on Facebook, that “what is happening is a natural result of the state’s turning a blind eye to loose weapons over the past years.” He added, “The government needs bold steps to restore its prestige internally and externally.”
Analysts believe that Iraq may face difficult scenarios in the coming period, as some estimates expect that Israel may exploit this file to expand the scope of its military operations in the region, especially with the escalation of regional tensions. Security analyses indicated that any Israeli escalation against Iraq may drag the region into a comprehensive confrontation that is difficult to contain.
