Oil rose on Thursday, breaking the benchmark Brent crude for $ 49, after US crude inventories fell sharply.
By 4:05 pm GMT, Brent crude futures were up 2.7 percent at $ 49.09 a barrel.
Nymex crude for August delivery rose 2.9% to $ 46.43 a barrel.
The US Energy Information Administration data showed a sharp drop in US oil inventories last week by 6.3 million barrels in excess of expectations.
The data showed the decline of US stocks of gasoline during the same period by 3.7 million barrels
