To avoid catastrophic costs. The United Nations is quick to resolve the al-Aqsa crisis before Friday

Arabic and International Tuesday, July 25, 2017

The United Nations envoy to the Middle East, Nikolai Mladenov, called for a solution to the crisis of the Al-Aqsa Mosque before Friday, warning that the crisis could have "catastrophic costs beyond the walls of the old city."

Israel installed electronic gates to detect metal at the entrances of Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem after two policemen were shot dead on July 14, sparking the bloodiest clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in years.

Many Palestinians refuse to go through e-gates, pray on the streets and take part in protests that often turn violent. They reject what they see as a violation of decades-old arrangements for worshipers to enter the Temple Mount.

    Risks will escalate

he said Mladenov told reporters, after he gave testimony in a closed session of the Security Council of the United Nations: "It is absolutely necessary to find a solution to the current crisis before Friday."

He added: "The risk will escalate on the ground if the Friday prayers again without finding a solution to the current crisis."

He also warned that the crisis is not a local event.

Mladenov said the crisis could have "catastrophic costs beyond the walls of the old city, as well as Israel, Palestine and the Middle East itself."

Mladenov said he urged council members to use their influence with Israel and the Palestinians to persuade them to defuse tension and allow worshipers to enter the holy shrine.

"It is very important to keep the status quo in Jerusalem," he said.

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon told reporters that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was working to calm the situation, stressing that "we will do everything necessary to maintain security."

For his part, Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour accused Israel of "preventing worshipers" from reaching the campus, saying that the Security Council should demand the withdrawal of metal detectors and cameras "in full and without conditions."

The UN Security Council, composed of 15 members, met on the crisis at the request of France, Egypt and Sweden.

Sweden's deputy ambassador to the United Nations, Carl Scowo, said in a tweet that members of the Security Council "agree on the need to ease escalation, denounce violence, and urgently dialogue; to calm tensions in Jerusalem."
