Sadr meets Saudi Crown Prince in Jeddah

Saudi Vice President Mohammed bin Salman met with Sadr's leader Muqtada al-Sadr in Jeddah, the official SPA news agency reported yesterday. "The Deputy Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, met in Jeddah the leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr," the agency said in a news report.
"The meeting witnessed the review of Saudi-Iraqi relations and a number of issues of common concern," she said.
Al-Sadr's office announced on Sunday that the latter was heading to Saudi Arabia, adding that the visit came at the official invitation of Riyadh.
The leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr arrived Sunday in Saudi Arabia at an official invitation. Al-Sadr was received at Jeddah International Airport by the former Saudi ambassador to Iraq and the secretary of state for Gulf affairs Thamer al-Sbahan, who was expelled by the Iraqi government last summer following a series of interference in internal affairs.
"It is good news for the breakthrough in Iraqi-Saudi relations," Saudi media quoted Sadr as saying, expressing hope that "this would be the beginning of retreat and the retreat of sectarian strife in the Arab and Islamic region."
Saudi sources said that during his visit to Riyadh, al-Sadr will meet a number of officials, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to discuss a number of issues and common issues.
Sadr's office said in a brief statement that the latter had been sent to Saudi Arabia at an official invitation from Riyadh.
Al-Sadr's visit to Saudi Arabia comes at a time when the relations between Baghdad and Riyadh have developed significantly after the visit of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi last month and his meeting with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, which resulted in the formation of a strategic cooperation council between the two countries.
