The Turkish Embassy in Washington announced the suspension of visas to enter Turkish territory, in an angry reaction to the suspension of US non-immigrant visa services at its diplomatic facilities in Turkey, following the arrest of a consular officer.
"Recent events have forced the Turkish government to reassess the commitment of the US government to the security of the facilities and personnel of the Turkish mission," the Turkish embassy said on its Twitter account.
The US embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara issued a statement on Twitter on Sunday, saying that recent events forced it to "re-evaluate the commitment of the Turkish government to the security of facilities and personnel of the US mission."
This week, Turkish authorities arrested a Turkish employee at the US consulate, allegedly for links to the US-based cleric Fathullah Gulen, who was blamed by the Turkish government for the failed coup last summer. Gulen denies involvement in the attempted coup.
Mattin Topaz is accused of espionage and "trying to overthrow the Turkish government and constitution." He is accused of conspiring with former heads of corruption investigations from 2013, 121 people involved in the attempted coup and hundreds using the use of encrypted phone messages.
The US embassy said it was "deeply disturbed", adding that the suspension of non-immigrant visas "came into force immediately" to reduce the number of visitors to the US embassy and consulate from now.
The suspension of services will affect business, tourism, medical treatment, students, reciprocal visits, crew members, media, journalists, diplomats, diplomatic visas and official visas.
The American pastor Andrew Brunson, who has been living in Turkey for more than 20 years, has been detained for a year for alleged relations with Gulen.
Turkey has arrested more than 50,000 people and dismissed 110,000 of their government jobs as part of an emergency declared in the country after the failed coup.
