The United States will withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as of Dec. 31, the State Department announced Thursday.
"The decision was not taken lightly and highlights US concerns about UNESCO's growing debt, the need for radical reforms in the organization and continued bias against Israel at UNESCO," the ministry said in a statement.
She added that Washington would seek "to continue as an observer in order to contribute to the views and experiences of the United States."
For its part, UNESCO expressed its "deep regret" for the announcement of the United States to withdraw from the organization.
The decision by the United States to withdraw from the organization represents a loss to the international community and to multilateralism, the organization's director-general Irina Bakova said in a press release.
The universality was crucial to UNESCO's mission to promote international peace and security in the face of hatred, violence and the defense of human rights and dignity.

The United States will withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as of Dec. 31, the State Department announced Thursday.
