The Russian Foreign Ministry denied that it would refuse to extend the mission of the joint international mechanism to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria if the results of the investigation were directed against Damascus.
A statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday that the United States insists on extending the mission of the joint mechanism of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations, but it distorts the position of Moscow in this regard.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in its statement that there was no report on the joint international mechanism, expressing surprise at Washington's quest to extend the task of the mechanism mentioned in these circumstances.
"We have always said and reiterate that our position on extending the mission of the joint mechanism of inquiry will depend on the quality of the investigation and its conformity with the requirements of the Chemical Weapons Convention, not on who will be charged," the statement said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the report must first examine the joint international mechanism, and then consider extending its mission, calling for calm in this area.
