The C919 passenger plane, made by China itself, completed its first long flight on Friday, a move the plane's manufacturers say is moving it to the stage of obtaining a flight certification.

In a statement, the Chinese commercial aircraft company "C919" launched a two-hour and 23-minute flight from Shanghai to the central city of Xi'an, cutting 1,300 kilometers and reaching a height of 7,800 meters, the company said in a statement.

China is seeking to compete with the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320 with its C919, a symbol of Beijing's ambition in civil aviation. The manufacturer said the plane would remain in Xi'an for further testing.

The latest Chinese plane flight is its sixth experience since it was launched for the first time on 5 May.

Kumak is seeking a flight certificate for its flight from the responsible regulators in China and also from the European Aviation Safety Agency (ESA), which agreed in April to start certification procedures.

Comac said it plans to test six C919s eventually, and the first test for the second aircraft will be at the end of this year.
