Members of the United Nations Security Council were unable to vote on the draft resolution on a one-month humanitarian truce throughout Syria to send humanitarian assistance to civilians.

The UN Security Council postponed the vote on the draft resolution on the truce in Syria, including the eastern gouta of Damascus, submitted by Kuwait and Sweden, until Friday.

After a session that lasted for more than two hours, the council's president, Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi, announced that he would vote on the draft resolution prepared by his country (as the only Arab member and head of the council's work this February) in coordination with Sweden.

The meeting in the last 15 minutes witnessed a sharp debate between the President of the Council on the one hand and the Russian and Syrian delegates to the United Nations, on the other hand, when the President of the Security Council asked the Syrian regime's representative, Bashar Jaafari, not to proceed in his testimony.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Ambassador Vasily Nabyzia, asked the Presidency of the Council for an explanation of this request, while the representative of the Syrian regime said that he was speaking at a session that was called to discuss a matter related primarily to his country.

The number of civilians killed by the heavy shelling of the Syrian regime on the eastern Ghouta, during the past three days, was 275 dead.

The eastern Ghouta is part of the "reduction of tension" areas agreed at the Astana talks in 2017, with a guarantee from Turkey, Russia and Iran.

A few minutes before the start of the meeting, the representative of Sweden to the United Nations, Ambassador Olof Skog, called for the adoption by the Council today of the draft resolution submitted by his country to Kuwait.

But the delegate of Russia, called for "a realistic decision can be reached."
