The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is trying to win the support of Iraq's Shiites by increasing its investments in the country in a move aimed at curbing Iran's "expansion in the region," The Economist reported on Monday.

"Saudi Arabia is seeking to return its relations with Iraq to the pre-war level of Kuwait, when many Gulf people owned luxury homes in Shatt al-Arab and in Basra," the magazine said in a report.

"These relations resume in reality after three decades of suspension, as the largest Saudi government companies open offices in Baghdad, while Riyadh is just around the corner from the opening of its consulate in Basra, with the resumption of air navigation between the two countries by 140 trips per month."

Saudi Arabia, in the words of its Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, promised last month at the Iraq Reconstruction Conference in Iraq to grant Baghdad a $ 1 billion loan, a $ 500 million line of credit to secure exports to and from Iraq, from her side.

Saudi Arabia wants to restore Iraq's Arab identity to prevent Iran from using differences between Shi'ites and Sunnis. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is trying to overcome the tension between the two countries since Saddam Hussein and rid the kingdom of sectarian logic. Baghdad in 2015, the resumption of visas between them, and the transfer of Saudi funds to the most influential Shiite politicians.
