Myanmar President Hainen Kao, who is close to Aung San Suu Kyi, announced on Wednesday that he would resign immediately after nearly two years in office.
"The president asked to be relieved of his post today," Sky News said in an interview with the Associated Press news agency.
"Hitten is the first civilian president to serve as president in the country for decades."
