The United States has announced criminal charges and sanctions against nine Iranians and an Iranian company for trying to infiltrate electronically to hundreds of universities around the world and dozens of companies and sectors of the US government, and Washington has indicated they are working for the Iranian government.

The US Treasury Department said in a statement that the Iranians are linked to the institution "Mbna" Iran, and that the assets of individuals and the company has been frozen and the prohibition of dealing with American citizens with them.

According to Washington, the Mbna Institute was established in 2013 to "assist universities and Iranian scientific research organizations in stealing access to non-Iranian scientific sources."

The US Department of Justice said in a statement that the attack, which began at least since 2013, resulted in the theft of more than 31 terabytes of academic data and intellectual property rights from 144 US universities and 176 universities in 21 other countries. The ministry described the attack as " Sponsored by a state. "

Prosecutors said the hacking campaign targeted e-mail accounts of more than 100,000 university professors around the world, penetrating nearly 8,000 of them. Hackers also targeted the US Department of Labor, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission of the United States, the United Nations and computer systems for the states of Hawaii and Indiana.

An official at an Internet infrastructure company said the Justice Department had warned companies in the sector in particular on Friday of possible attacks from Iran.

Deputy Justice Minister Rud Rosenstein, speaking at a news conference, said Iranian pirates accused of being out of justice said they could face extradition requests from more than 100 countries if they left Iran.

The infiltrators were not charged with direct orders from the Iranian government. But they were accused of committing criminal acts on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi condemned the move, saying it was "provocative, illegitimate and without any justification and another proof of the hostility of the US (ruling) circles toward the Iranian nation."
