WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's withdrawal from Iran's nuclear deal has sparked widespread divisions within the White House and raised questions about the most significant changes in the balance of power within the US president's national security team, the New York Times reported.

John Bolton, the national security adviser, appeared to be an influential figure in Iran's decision-making, while Defense Secretary James Matisse remained in a distant corner because of his opposition to leaving the agreement, while Mike Pompeo, Because he wants to give the diplomatic negotiations room, even if small.

In addition to bureaucratic maneuvers, analysts say the Iranian debate reveals a deep split in the Trump team between Matisse, which wants to change the behavior of hostile governments, and Bolton, who wants to change governments themselves.

"Since the 9/11 attacks, there has been ongoing political tension about defining the United States' target for rogue states," said Robert S. Letuck, vice president of programs and director of international security studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Research Center. Must change its behavior or its systems as a whole? ".

The newspaper said that "Matisse" if he wanted to struggle for the survival of the agreement, was not to find who hears.

In contrast, Bolton was able to form a comfortable relationship with Trump, which enables him to be singled out in mini-meetings rather than high-level meetings of the National Security Council, especially since he agrees with Trump on the slogan "America First."

On the impact of Bolton, the newspaper said that the letter "Trump"

At the center of all this, Matisse is considered the only one, according to the newspaper, while Pompeo is standing in a gray area between Matisse and Bolton, where the US Secretary of State impressed European diplomats by announcing his willingness to continue negotiating the reforms of the agreement.

"He was not an impostor, he had a great desire to reform him, and he also had the credibility to present it to the president," said Mark DuBoitz, chief executive of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, who is openly critical of the agreement.
