In light of recent developments in the Syrian territories, Israeli press reports have reported an agreement that could calm tensions between the two countries.
As the Times of Israel reported on Israeli television, Israel reached a secret agreement with Russia to keep Iranian troops in Syria far from the Israeli border.
According to the "deal" referred to, Israel will accept the return of the Syrian regime forces to the border on the Golan Heights, in return for Russian assurances that there are no Iranian forces or militias affiliated with it, such as Hezbollah in the region.
Under the deal, Russia will ask all foreign forces in Syria to leave, including Iran, Hezbollah guerrillas and US and Turkish troops.
According to Israeli television, the agreement was finalized by telephone on Friday, bringing together Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who is visiting Moscow next week, and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shweigo.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hinted that Iranian forces and Hezbollah guerrillas should be removed from the southern border of Syria near Israel, noting that the military presence in the area should be limited to Syrian forces.
Following the statement, which was seen as a green light from Russia for the presence of Iranian troops in the rest of Syria except for the border area with Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented that Israel would target Iranian forces anywhere in Syria.
The accord gives Israel the right to deal with any Iranian military activities in Syria.
Israeli television quoted diplomatic sources as saying that on the basis of this "right", Israel considered the agreement important because it implicitly implied Russian and American support for Israel's objection to the Iranian military presence in Syria.
According to a senior Israeli official, the agreement means that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad recovers most of Syrian territory, under Russian protection and with Israeli blessing, more than seven years after the outbreak of war.
The past weeks have witnessed an unprecedented military escalation between Israel and Iran in Syria, where the forces of the two sides have exchanged blows on one another's targets, in an evolution that hinted at an impending confrontation.
