[rtl]US President Donald Trump told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macaron last month that he would prevent German luxury car manufacturers from participating in the US market, according to German magazine Wirtschaft Fuchs.[/rtl]

[rtl]Trump told Macron in April that he would stick to his trade policy to prevent Mercedes-Benz cars from driving in New York, the magazine said, quoting a number of European and American diplomats who did not publish their names.[/rtl]

[rtl]Earlier this month, Trump opened a commercial investigation into whether car imports damaged the US auto sector.[/rtl]

[rtl]The investigation is likely to charge up to 25 percent on the basis of the same "national security" rationale used to impose US steel and aluminum tariffs in March.[/rtl]

[rtl]Analysts at Evercorp said in a note last week that the imposition of the tariffs would undermine the commercial viability of German automakers in exporting cars from Germany to the United States, and impose a burden of 4.5 billion euros on manufacturers German luxury cars.[/rtl]
