The Yemeni army begins the battle of Hodeidah with cover of the Arab coalition W NB-239235-636644736584539194

The Yemeni army, backed by the Saudi-led Arab alliance, launched an attack on the western city of Hodeidah in a battle that is considered the most difficult in the ongoing war in Yemen for more than three years.

The Yemeni government said in a statement issued by its media office on Wednesday that "coalition aircraft and ships are carrying out strikes aimed at Houthi fortifications in support of the ground operations of the Yemeni army forces that have gathered south of the city overlooking the Red Sea," Reuters reported.

"The liberation of the port represents the beginning of the fall of the Huthis and will secure navigation in the Strait of Bab al-Mandab, and will cut off the hands of Iran, which has long sunk Yemen with weapons that shed innocent Yemeni blood."

The attack comes after a deadline set by the UAE for the Houthis, who control the capital Sana'a , to hand over the port of Hodeidah under their control.

In a related development, the Houthis announced targeting a barge of the Arab alliance led by Saudi Arabia off the port city of Hodeidah.

The Al-Masirah channel quoted a source in the Houthi naval forces as saying that the barge had been targeted by two naval missiles and the smoke was rising, adding that other coalition battalions had retreated after the target barge was set on fire off the coast of Hodeidah.

The source pointed out that the target barge carrying troops prepared for the landing on the coast of Hodeidah.

In turn, the United Nations called on the parties to the conflict in Yemen to the need to preserve the lives of civilians after the attack on the port of Hodeidah.

The International Red Cross also warned that the attack by the Arab alliance on Hodeidah could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe whose consequences are unfulfilled.
