Dollar gains erode after China-EU summit begins

    2018/07/16 11:09

(Encyclopedia of this day , news | News Iraq ) -

The dollar fell slightly against most major currencies after positive trade talks between China and the European Union, but weaker economic data from China and the escalating trade war between Beijing and Washington have given rise to optimism.

Prime Minister Li Keqiang said on Monday that his country would open up its markets more and cut tariffs in a bid for a more balanced trade with the European Union.

The comments came as second-quarter data showed slower economic growth in China, raising concerns about the possible consequences of a comprehensive Sino-US trade war.

The meeting between China and the European Union is expected to release a statement confirming the two sides' commitment to the multilateral trading system.

The positive tone of the talks pushed riskier currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars as well as the euro to the upside, while the dollar index fell 0.2% against a basket of major currencies to 94.608.

The dollar was almost steady against the Japanese currency at 112.38 yen.

The Chinese yuan also briefly retreated, but recorded in the latest reading a rise of 0.1% to 6.7014 yuan to the dollar.

The euro rose slightly to $ 1.1702, remaining above the nine-day low of $ 1.1610 touched last week.

Sterling gained slightly to $ 1.3246 from last week's low of $ 1.3101.
