The Egyptian embassy in Washington announced that the US Senate unanimously approved on Thursday a bill honoring the late Egyptian President Mohamed Anwar Sadat.
"The bill grants the late leader Sadat the gold medal for Congress," the embassy said in a press release. "It recognizes his historic achievements and his courageous contributions to peace in the Middle East."
The ceremony coincides with the 100th anniversary of Sadat's birth on December 25, 1918, and 40 years after the signing of the Camp David peace treaty with Israel on September 17, 1978.
Sadat won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict and his acceptance of a peace treaty with Israel after the October 1973 war.
