Two Iranian boats close to US ship

Two Iranian boats were about 300 yards from the USS Essex in the Gulf on Friday, while the commander of the US Central Command was aboard the ship, according to Pentagon officials.
General Joseph Fotill, commander-in-chief of the US Central Command, was monitoring routine flight operations aboard the ship when the incident occurred.
Officials said the confrontation with the Iranian boats was described as "safe and professional" by the navy because the Iranians did not show "aggressive intentions."
There was no indication that the crew of the two Iranian boats were aware of the presence of Fotel. While one official said that the two Iranian bombers sailed in parallel with the American ship.
At one point, one of the Iranian boats crossed the American ship 300 yards away.
In July 2016, Fotel faced another confrontation with the Iranian navy when five armed Iranian ships approached the Gulf from a US warship on board.

Two Iranian boats speeded up from a US ship in the waters of the Persian Gulf , military officials and US press reports said.

The Washington Post reported the incident on Friday, confirming that the two boats, which approached approximately 270 meters, belonged to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

The commander of the US Central Command, General Joseph Fotel, was the time to board the military vessel, the largest US naval vessel in the Persian Gulf, officials said.

But the leadership said in a statement to the press: "Today's incident between the forces of the Fifth Fleet and the naval forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard described the safe and professional."

"The US Navy continues its duties in accordance with international law," the statement said.

The Revolutionary Guard has a history of serious incidents with US ships in the Persian Gulf, which has slowed down recently.

Since January 2016, the waters of the Gulf have witnessed about 50 incidents of "unprofessional" approach by Iranian forces toward US ships, most recently in August 2017 when an Iranian drone flew near an aircraft on board the US aircraft carrier Nimitz.
