North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un arrived in China on an unannounced visit in response to Chinese President Xi Jinping's invitation, Chinese state media reported.
The visit of Jung-un and his wife, Ri Seol-Jo, will continue to China until January 10.
Reports said the visit was aimed at resuming negotiations between the two sides in preparation for a second summit between the North Korean leader and US President Donald Trump.
It is reported that the North Korean president traveled to China on his armored vehicle.
This is Kim Jong-un's fourth visit to China in one year.
Reports said Tuesday was the birthday of the 35-year-old North Korean leader, although the North Korean media did not confirm the news.
China is the most important diplomatic ally of North Korea, and it is Pyongyang's most important trading partner and main supporter.
"Kim Jong-un is excited to inform the Trump administration that he has diplomatic and economic options other than what Washington and Seoul can offer," said Harry J. Kazianis, director of defense studies at Al-Saleh National Center, told Reuters.
Kim Jong-un did not meet China's president during the first six years of his ascendancy, but traveled to China three times last year.
The BBC's Laura Baker, in Seoul, says the latest three-day visit could spark speculation that a second North American-North Korean summit will be held.
Trump told media earlier that "good dialogue" had taken place with North Korea, but US sanctions on Pyongyang would continue.
Kim Jong-un, in his New Year speech, said he was committed to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, but warned that events could change as long as US sanctions persist.
Diplomatic cooperation between US leaders Trump and North Korean President Jong-un has stalled since the historic summit held in Singapore in June.
The two leaders signed an agreement pledging nuclear disarmament from the region, but they did not give details of the deal
