The New York Times reported on the details of a "mysterious" security operation carried out by US Marines in 2017 against al-Qaeda elements on the borders of Tunisia and Algeria, amid the silence of the Tunisian authorities because of the sensitivity of the issue, she said.
US naval vessels arrived two years ago at a naval base in the province of Bizerte, north of the country, the newspaper quoted witnesses from a Tunisian sailor as saying.
The US marines have been fighting west of Tunisia, specifically on the Tunisian-Algerian border, but other details remain unclear about the operation, according to the US Marines.
Washington has been strengthening its security partnership with Tunisia in recent years, training 150 US soldiers and advising their Tunisian counterparts in one of the largest US missions on the African continent.
The newspaper said that the Tunisian authorities wanted to keep the subject secret, given the "sensitivity" of the issue of participation of foreign forces in similar operations on Tunisian territory.
The American newspaper reported that a Tunisian soldier and another American were injured during the incident, but did not mention the death toll among the terrorists.
She stressed that the Tunisian authorities want to keep the subject secret, and only mention "US-Tunisian military cooperation", without giving precise details on the form of such cooperation.
A spokesman for the US Command in Africa, recently revealed in a report that it described as important, that the US Marines fought a fierce battle in 2017 in the country of North Africa did not reveal his name, and said they fought alongside the forces of partner against the elements of "Al Qaeda" in the Islamic Maghreb.
The AFRICOM military command lauded the courage of two Marines, but they did not give details, citing what they said were "rating ratings, protection of the force and diplomatic sensitivities," the report, published in the National Interest magazine, said.
