said US Treasury Secretary Stephen Manoucan on Monday that the US Treasury Department will not hand over tax returns to the head of Donald Trump to Democratic lawmakers.
In a letter to Congress, the US secretary of state said a request by a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives for the Republican president's tax statements "lacks a legitimate goal" and therefore poses "serious constitutional issues." They could have consequences for all taxpayers.
Mr Menuchin's refusal to hand over the statements would certainly raise another legal clash between the besieged president and the Democrats in Congress who control the council, according to Agence France-Presse.
Under a law granting access to the president's tax returns, a US congressional committee last month asked the US Internal Revenue Service for tax returns submitted by Trump and eight of its commercial entities.
