US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left Baghdad after an unannounced four-hour visit in which he met Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and other officials.
"We wanted to inform them of the increasing threats we have made ... so that they can ensure that we do everything necessary to protect our team," Pompeo told reporters after leaving the Iraqi capital.
Pompeo told reporters on his way to Baghdad that Washington was concerned about Iraq's sovereignty after increasing Iranian activities.
"I wanted to go to Baghdad to talk to the leadership there, and to assure them that we are ready to continue to ensure the sovereignty and independence of Iraq."
"The reason we are going to Baghdad is information that indicates an escalation in Iran's activities," Pompeo told reporters accompanying him on his trip to the Iraqi capital.

- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iraqi officials he met during a surprise visit to Baghdad on Tuesday night, motivated by Iran's "escalation," pledged to provide "appropriate protection" to US interests in their country.

"We have talked about the importance of Iraq ensuring its ability to provide appropriate protection for Americans in their country," Pompeo told reporters accompanying him on his trip to the Iraqi capital, adding that Iraqi officials "showed me that they understood that this was their responsibility."

The visit of the US Secretary of State to Baghdad, after Pompeo canceled a planned visit to the German capital Berlin. The Foreign Ministry did not announce Pompeo's visit to Iraq.

"I want to go to Baghdad to talk with the leadership there to assure them of our readiness to continue to ensure that Iraq is a sovereign and independent state," Pompeo told reporters accompanying him on his trip to the Iraqi capital.

Pompeo noted that America's concerns about Iraq's sovereignty were not new and wanted Iraq to be independent and not to owe credit to another country.

Pompeo's visit to Iraq came as US President George W. Bush's administration stepped up pressure on Iran amid mounting tension between Tehran and Washington.

The Iraqi Nation Party said on Wednesday that the visit of US Secretary of State Mark Pompeo to Baghdad came to "liberate Iraq from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards."
