Reuters) - US President Donald Trump's candidate to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Millie, said withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan was too early and would be a strategic mistake.
"I think early withdrawals would be a strategic mistake," Milley, the chief of staff of the US military and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday during a Senate Armed Services hearing, pledging that he would give explicit advice to the president of the country, So for him personally.
The general stressed that he would not allow anyone to force him to make "stupid decisions".
Milley expressed his belief that the longest war in US history would end with a settlement with the Taliban movement, noting "some progress" in that direction.
Milley also said the United States should keep a limited military force in Iraq and Syria to "support stability" in these two countries.
Melli's remarks came against the backdrop of a meeting on peace in Afghanistan recently hosted by the Qatari capital of Doha, following a new round of negotiations between Washington and the "Taliban", culminating in the agreement to prepare a "road map for peace."
