US military chief arrives in Iraq amid protests and questions about Iran's influence

The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Millie, arrived in Iraq on Tuesday amid a wave of anti-government protests in the Middle East and questions about its possible impact on Iranian influence in the region .
Anti-government protests erupted in Iraq in early October and turned into the biggest demonstrations since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 .
Lebanon has been the scene of anti-government protests over the past five weeks due to anger over corruption among sectarian politicians .
Some experts believe the protests in the Middle East, including within Iran itself, could give the United States a chance to curtail Iran's influence in the region. But they warned it could also harm US interests .
There are more than 5,000 US troops in Iraq to support local forces, although Iraq has rejected any long-term presence of additional US troops who have crossed the border during its withdrawal from northern Syria .
There are also fears that Iran will respond militarily to US allies in the region to ease mounting pressure over protests at home .
Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated after air strikes on Saudi oil facilities on September 14 that followed attacks on tankers in Gulf waters. Washington blames Iran for the attacks.
"Iran is acting, covertly and publicly, aggressively towards its neighbors in the region, " Milli told reporters this week .
"Are they going to continue that in the future? I don't know. I want to say no, but they probably will ."
Milli, who is visiting the Middle East for the first time since taking office in September, is meeting with allies in the region. On Monday, he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman .
The United States has deployed about 3,000 extra US troops in Saudi Arabia over the past months to bolster the kingdom's defenses .
