Japan to set up diplomatic office in Irbil

The Japanese embassy in Iraq is to set up a temporary office in Irbil to further strengthen its system amid worsening security situation in the country, the Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday.
The diplomatic office will be open later in the day, according to the ministry. The ministry decided to establish the office in the northern Kurdish city of Arbil to ensure the safety of Japanese residents and provide support to Japanese companies in Iraq.
"Japanese nationals in Iraq have taken temporary refuge in Arbil, where it is relatively safe," Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida told a press conference. "We would like to provide Japanese nationals with protection and support without omission," said Kishida. The ministry also opened a liaison office in Tokyo.
