Shafaq News / The Security and Defense Committee of the Iraqi Parliament revealed, on Tuesday, that the United States of America has purchased land and its embassy building in the Green Zone from the Iraqi government.

A member of the committee, Kata Al-Rikabi, told Shafaq News, “The United States of America bought the land and its embassy building in the Green Zone from the government of Iyad Allawi,” indicating that “Washington is the one who chose the location of its embassy.”

Al-Rikabi said, “The Embassy of the United States of America in Iraq is the largest in the world, and the area is estimated at more than (100) acres, and the number of employees in it exceeds (1000) employees.”

He added, “But we do not know of any amount the price of this land was sold to the American side, but there was definitely a complacency in this file.”

The US embassy in Baghdad is the largest around the world, as its area is similar to the size of the Vatican, and it was built on an area of 104 acres, and then it is considered five times larger than the largest US embassy in the past (the Yerevan embassy), according to a report by the American “Fox News” network.

After years of construction, it was inaugurated in January 2009, after a series of construction operations whose cost exceeded $ 750 million, accommodating about 16,000 employees and contractors.

The embassy complex is located on the Tigris River, and it consists of 21 buildings, and it consists of five main sections, which are six residential complexes, water and waste facilities, a power station, two diplomatic buildings, and an entertainment section, as well as cinemas, restaurants, a shopping center, and a swimming pool. A gym, basketball and football fields.

The engineering design of the embassy was not publicly announced, but it was designed with capabilities that guarantee self-sufficiency in energy and water, in light of the electricity and water cuts in Baghdad, and the security disturbances that erupt from time to time.

The fence surrounding the embassy is at least 9 feet high and made of reinforced concrete strong enough to disperse the force of the blast from the detonation of a car bomb, rockets, or mortar shells.

From the inside, the embassy was exceptionally fortified, as it was designed as an American fortress against biological bombs, as it was equipped with a system to purify the air from any chemical or biological attack, in addition to small windows that resemble cracks.
