The head of the Agriculture, Water and Marsh Committee in Parliament, Salam al-Shammari, confirmed, on Thursday, that most of the Kurdistan region’s ports are not subject to federal instructions, while he called on the relevant ministries and security agencies to prevent the entry of imported crops.
Al-Shammari said in an interview reported by the Iraqi News Agency, that “the entry of agricultural crops through the border crossings unofficially harmed the agricultural sector and the local product in general, and there are several laws issued by the House of Representatives to protect the local product, but the relevant ministries did not comply, and there is a breakdown in the borders and the entry of materials to hit Local agricultural product ”.
Al-Shanari called on the competent ministries and security agencies to “take their real role to prevent the entry of the importer who competes with the local product, in order to preserve the agricultural reality,” noting that “tomato farms in Al-Zubair district of Basra Governorate have announced their readiness to supply all governorates of Iraq, and we are surprised by the entry of many trucks from Tomato crop to make Iraq an importer, not an exporter.
Al-Shammari added that "there are products that enter the Kurdistan region, some of them in an official and unofficial manner, and most of the region's outlets are not subject to federal instructions," stressing "the need to put an end to this and hand over the ports to the federal government so that the borders are in control of them to proceed with a real agricultural sector."
