The Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Committee called on the government to establish checkpoints at the entrances to the governorates to control the entry of imported products and crops through the border crossings of the Kurdistan Region. The head of the committee, Faleh Al-Khazali, saw that “up to 30% of the Iraqi people are farmers in need of support at the level of border control.” And adherence to the agricultural calendar approved by the Ministry of Agriculture according to each governorate.”
Al-Khazali said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “Imported crops are invading the markets coming from neighboring countries with the beginning of marketing local crops and through the outlets of the Kurdistan region because there is no control over them,” explaining that “the committee hosted a number of farmers, and we discovered that import policies are harming many from the farmers of the Kurdistan region, in addition to harming the entire agricultural sector.”
The representative called for “setting checkpoints for imported crops along the borders and ports of the Kurdistan region, in addition to inside the governorates,” noting that “the committee hosted the head of the ports authority, who confirmed that he had held 150 meetings with the Kurdistan region, but nothing was achieved from the outcomes of the meetings.” ".
