BAGHDAD / NINA / House Speaker Osama Nujaifi discussed with the UN
representative to Iraq, Martin Kobler, the extraordinary situation in
Iraq and the issue of human rights.

    A statement issued today 24,
Feb by the Information Office of the President of the House of
Representatives said that "Nujaifi met Kobler, who expressed deep
concern of the current situation that Iraq is going through and the
    current political crisis.

    Kobler, according to the statement,
confirmed "they are the only international party that meet with
protesters and pursue violations that happen in the human rights file
through continuous and intense communication with various parties.

    He
said "The task of the United Nations in Iraq is to reduce violations in
human rights' file and if there is a single case of torture it will be
    very big issue for them.

    For his part, Nujaifi condemned
assassinations, continued arrests and others' peruse "as he said," to
crack down protesters day after day.

    The statement quoted Nujaifi
as saying: We have great fears of harassment of detainees and risk of
aggravating cases to dire consequences, adding that the elections is too
close and it should be held in a secure and stable environment, but
what is happening is not consistent with democracy. / End
