    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (June 21, 2024), the Parliamentary Finance Committee confirmed its intention to host the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, soon in the committee, in response to the collapse of the electrical system and the decline in processing hours despite the financial allocations to the Ministry.
The head of the committee, Atwan Al-Atwani, said in a statement received by “Baghdad Today”: “The Ministry of Electricity is still accumulating failure in reforming the energy sector. The Ministry has only made more promises, which the Iraqi people in all governorates have not found any response to, especially with Temperatures increasing.”
He added, "We in the Parliamentary Finance Committee were keen to provide the necessary financial allocations to the Ministry of Electricity in the 2023-2025 budget. In return, the minister pledged to provide good electrical equipment, different from previous years in the summer season, but so far we have not noticed any real change. Rather, the situation is bad." To the worst, as the national system is witnessing an unprecedented collapse, while the ministry stands idly by regarding the suffering of our people and their chronic tragedy with electricity, and reforming this sector is supposed to be a top priority for the ministry and its current minister.
He continued, “At a time when we call on the ministry to find urgent solutions, to remedy the crisis and alleviate the suffering of citizens, we affirm that the Finance Committee will work to host the Minister of Electricity at the beginning of the new legislative term, to find out the causes of this collapse, and after that we will have a strict stance towards this failure.” Continuous,” he said.
On June 18, Representative Youssef Al-Kalabi announced his intention to question the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Fadel, due to the ministry’s “major failure” in resolving the electricity crisis.
Al-Kalabi said in a tweet on the (X) platform, “The Minister of Electricity (professional and specialist) was unable to fulfill his pledges before the Finance Committee and the House of Representatives in 2023 when he requested a large allocation to the ministry and promised to end the electricity problem.”
It is noteworthy that the expected hosting and interrogation of the Minister of Electricity comes in light of a long interruption of electricity supply hours and a significant rise in temperatures for days in Iraq, where it sometimes exceeded 50 degrees Celsius.
On the 12th of this month, the Ministry of Electricity announced the dismissal of more than 10 officials in the ministry’s sectors in different governorates, under the direction of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, “due to the delay in preparing energy during the past days.”
