Moscow and Baghdad discuss building nuclear reactors
Informed sources in the Russian nuclear agency, "Rosatom", confirmed on Monday that the project to build nuclear reactors in Iraq is still under discussion.
Russia Today quoted these sources as saying that "in the framework of dialogue with Iraqi partners on nuclear issues, the full agenda of possible cooperation, both in the energy field and in non-energy applications of nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes, is being discussed."
"At the same time, work is underway to form a regulatory body for such cooperation," she added.
For its part, the Iraqi Authority for the Control of Iraqi Radioactive Sources announced that it "intends to build 8 nuclear reactors to produce electricity with a value of about forty billion dollars in the coming years in an attempt to address the electricity shortage in the country and respond to the increasing demand annually, especially in the summer."
The head of Kamal Hussein Latif, said that "the talks with the Russian company Rosatom have gone an excellent way," adding that his country is conducting similar discussions with another country, noting that "8 reactors do not constitute the final number as they produce only 8,000 gigabytes, which covers the need." Current consumption until 2030-2035," adding, "It is possible to build a smaller number, for example 4 reactors, and thus we have achieved 70% of our plan that we set."
He stressed that the security situation, especially in the southern governorates, is completely stable, which allows for the start of planning and establishing such projects, in addition to the fact that many of the northern and central regions are stable in security, as he put it.
