“Meetings are going smoothly.”
The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc in the Iraqi parliament, Vian Sabri, announced that preparations have been made to hold the next session of Parliament in dialogue with other political parties, noting that "the results so far are good and positive."
Sabri said in a statement to the official website of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and followed by Kurdistan TV: "After the Federal Supreme Court issued its decision on the constitutionality and legality of the first session of Parliament, we are currently making preparations for holding the next session of the Parliament with other parties."
She added that "the ongoing discussions with the political parties are very positive and good, and so far we have not encountered any obstacle, and the meetings are going smoothly."
The presidency of the Iraqi Council of Representatives announced last Thursday, after holding a meeting to discuss the provisions and procedures related to the nomination of the post of the President of the Republic, to set the seventh of next February, as the date for holding a session to elect the President of the Republic.
A statement stated that it was decided during the meeting, "to announce the names of the candidates for the post of President of the Republic who meet the legal requirements on Monday, January 31, after completing the legal procedures based on the Law of Provisions for Candidacy for the Post of President of the Republic No. 8 of 2012."
And last Tuesday, the Iraqi Federal Court, the highest judicial authority in the country, ratified the re-election of Muhammad al-Halbousi as Speaker of the House of Representatives, after an appeal by MPs Basem Khashan and Mahmoud al-Mashhadani against the first session of Parliament, which was held on the ninth of this January.
This decision comes while Iraq is still experiencing the repercussions of the early elections on the tenth of October, and episodes of violence following the announcement of their results.
Parliament is supposed to elect, after its first session, within 30 days, a new president of the republic, who in turn must designate a prime minister, within 15 days from the date of his election, to be the candidate of the "largest parliamentary bloc", according to the constitution.
The political blocs live in a tense atmosphere during the negotiations they are waging with the aim of forming a parliamentary coalition capable of nominating a prime minister, leading to the formation of a government to run the country for the next four years.
The first session, on the ninth of this month, witnessed altercations over who owns the largest bloc in Parliament, between the Sadrist movement led by Muqtada al-Sadr and the coordination framework, most notably the Al-Fateh Alliance and the State of Law bloc.
Each of the parties asserts that it was able to form the largest bloc through alliances in Parliament, entitled to nominate the Prime Minister, while the Parliament presidency has not officially resolved this matter.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party nominated Hoshyar Zebari for the position of President of the Republic, while the Patriotic Union departed from the Kurdistan Consensus by nominating Barham Salih for the position again.
