Iraqi state television said that the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius arrived in Baghdad on Sunday for talks with officials on ways to cope with the organization of the Islamic State, which has made progress in northern Iraq.

The Kurdish officials said Fabius will travel later to Arbil, capital of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region for further talks.

The Islamic state controlled large areas in northern Iraq since June and kill captives of non-Sunni Muslims also left thousands homeless, prompting the United States to direct the first air strikes in the region since Washington withdrew its troops from Iraq in 2011.
