Because of their quality and accuracy of their work..Syrian workers pull construction rugs from Iraqis
Imad, 33, is forced to leave to collect his building equipment, in response to the request of the owner of the house. They hold Syrian citizenship, which did not leave Imad the opportunity to complete what he started, according to what the local construction worker explains.
In his speech, Imad says that "his job opportunities have started to decrease recently, after the Syrian laborers crowded the Iraqi construction workers, who hardly get their opportunities that secure their livelihood."
Construction workers, or what is known locally as “labor,” is a profession that is considered one of the most difficult professions in Iraq, and the least paid. It requires only “semi-torn and worn out” clothes and to get up early and carry shovels in your hand, or work within a team of your peers led by the “Caliphate” - Al-Usta. A profession that only competes with itself, but even these workers found competitors in their country, the Syrians, who attracted to them the owners of the houses under construction, wages and work, so that the Iraqi worker would be a spectator, as usual, of what is happening, and wait for an opportunity that comes to him with every car that opens its door near them. To open the door to his daily income, to fill his strength or that of his family.
For his part, Muhammad, 35, complains about the situation of local construction workers in the country, saying that “Iraqi construction workers sleep on the sidewalks of the streets near the main intersections in the popular areas in Baghdad and the rest of the provinces, and often fail to get a job opportunity if they do not follow those procedures within hours. The first dawn is where the stock of construction and demolition workers flourishes and the rubble is lifted with their simple tools that they use (shovels, hammer, rubble transport wagon, ropes, as well as a building shool or shawl).
Muhammad adds that “the nature of our work has no rules. Rather, we gather around any expatriate who breaks into our sidewalks in search of workers so that whomever he chooses can enjoy his day’s sustenance. He is chosen, as he may return to his home empty-handed and end his day without financial reward, and there are those who come from distant areas to work here, whether from southern governorates or others, and they live in hotels near their work centers in the Bab al-Sharqi area, Sadr City and other areas.”
Ali, 29, identifies, in an interview, one of the cases that construction workers suffer from, saying that “the local construction workers do not have pension salaries, so you find young and old people working here, but they, and in the event that one of them suffers any accident because of work, he alone bears the full responsibility without the presence of A party that takes care of him or protects him or provides his family with a salary or assistance until his recovery, and for this we witness that some are stressing themselves and some of them die due to the increasing pain of the disease or fractures that have not yet healed because of their financial need, we are neglected and we are just a number in the census of the Iraqi people.
Reputation, commitment, and a Syrian touch
I opened this file with the owners of houses under construction in Baghdad, the reasons for their rush to Syrian workers, as Abu Abdullah (46) says that “among the most important reasons that made me conclude an agreement with a group of tile installation workers (Tabik Al-Gashee) is the quality of work and the punctuality of their appointments in delivery, as well as continuing to work until the evening hours without restlessness or fatigue.”
Abu Ali (60), 60 years old, finds in his speech that “the reputation of the Syrian workforce prompted him to agree with a group of specialists to make the interior decorations of his house, as he wants the Syrian imprint to be present in his house despite the high wages.”
According to the man in his sixties, "the Syrian worker does not deal with the daily wage, but rather makes a total agreement according to a specific amount, and if we divide the agreed amount by working days, we will find that it is less than what the Iraqi receives."
12,000 Syrians work in Iraq
According to concerned sources in the Ministry of Interior, she revealed to Shafaq News Agency that "more than (8) thousand Syrians are distributed in the central and southern governorates, most of them are displaced Syrians who live in displacement camps in Kurdistan Region, while nearly 4,000 Syrians reside in Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf and Basra. Most of them work in malls, restaurants or tourist facilities.”
She pointed out that "the authorities of the region do not mind leaving the displaced Syrians in the displacement camps towards Baghdad or other provinces, and this is what necessitated the ministry to form foot teams that implement its procedures against the arrivals outside the fundamentalist controls in general, and for the displaced, the matter remains subject to the understandings between Baghdad and the region regarding this.
